What to Expect at a Newborn Session

June 11, 2017

Okay, so literally every parent comes here wondering what exactly to expect from their session, and I often have trouble getting people to even read my page "before your session". I get it, you have just had a baby and that is probably the last thing on your mind as you struggle to fit yourself into a brand new routine with someone who is extremely unpredictable and struggling themselves to find their place outside of your womb.

So basically, one of the top things that people are surprised about is the length of time it takes to get those lovely shots.

My average time for a full newborn shoot is 2 and a half hours. That is including family pictures. Usually it takes a little bit longer if there are toddlers involved. If there are toddlers involved, I will usually add a bit of extra time and do the family shots first in case the little ones get bored.

Then we will go to the newborn shots, which are usually started out with the baby naked on the beanbag with your choice of coloured backdrop. If the baby is unsettled then I will just go to wrapped shots, which pretty much settles all babies. A lot of parents come in telling me that the babies don't like to be swaddled, but I have yet to have a baby that refused as soon as they were in there nice and tight.

If the baby still doesn't want to settle we will just go to prop shots. I have lots of things to choose from!

I always recommend that if you bring you've children to bring activities for them to do, and lots of snacks. We do have a park near my place also which you are more than welcome to bring your children to if you feel that will help. If anyone has any questions feel free to ask!
